Caution to Oxygen Users Mar 7, 08
Terry deBruyn, RRT, Nonin Medical, Inc. I would like to offer a respectful reminder to oxygen users regarding the use of products which could be flammable in close proximity to oxygen equipment. My comments are not specific to any specific brand or type of product - this applies to anything that fits the general description of flammable.

A patient's perspective of POC's,  Mar 7, 08
Portable Oxygen Concentrators By Roxlyn G. Cole

"Lyn" Age 69. I was diagnosed with COPD on Valentine's Day 2003. Components included small amount of bronchitis & asthma, but the largest factor is bullous emphysema. Categorized as borderline mild/moderate obstruction: FEV1/FVC ratio = 57%, DLCO -diffusion, circa 60%. That means obstructed airways AND trouble getting oxygen from the lungs into the blood. Supplemental O2 24/7 = my energy and lifeline.

The Interactive Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation Curve  Jan 23, 08
An informative article for Patient Education.  The oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve is an important tool for understanding how our blood carries and releases oxygen. Specifically, the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve relates oxygen saturation (SO2) and partial pressure of oxygen in the blood (PO2), and is determined by what is called "hemoglobin's affinity for oxygen," that is, how readily hemoglobin acquires and releases oxygen molecules from its surrounding tissue. Before You Buy Home Oxygen Therapy Equipment  Dec 20, 07
Before you head out to buy a home oxygen system, there are many questions you should ask. You want to be sure that you choose the right oxygen therapy equipment for you, especially because it will be such a vital part of your life. The last thing you want is to buy oxygen therapy equipment, get it home and find out it's too loud, or its duration isn't long enough, or the refilling capabilities are not what you expected or need.

National Jewish Medical and Research Center
Answers some of the most common questions about oxygen therapy.  What is oxygen therapy? What are the benefits of oxygen therapy? How will I know if I need oxygen? What tests can be done to determine the need for oxygen? How do I get an oxygen therapy prescription? What types of oxygen systems are available? How does the oxygen get from the system to my body? What are some common concerns about oxygen?

American Lung Association
Provides an Oxygen Therapy Fact Sheet that explains what oxygen is, why our bodies need it and what it does to our bodies when we don't have enough oxygen.  It talks about the three ways to dispense oxygen in the home.

CHORUS
CHORUS is a "Quick reference" site.  More than 1,100 documents describe diseases, radiological findings, differential-diagnosis lists and pertinent anatomy, pathology and physiology.

Lung Diagrams
This site shows how a healthy lung looks/functions and how lungs suffering from Dynamic hyperinflation, Recruitment, Shear Injury, Shunting and Volutrauma look/functions.

The HUFF COUGH Technique
Coughing is one of the most important lung defense mechanisms, and unfortunately it is significantly impaired in COPD.  While the nasal passages provide a mechanism to warm and humidify the incoming air, and trap dirt particles and germs, inevitably some undesirable foreign material penetrates down into the lungs.  Coughing is needed to clear undesirable material from the bronchial tubes.  This module will teach you a more efficient way to do a COPD cough, called "Huff Coughing".
